Frankie Manning, one of the founding figures of Lindy Hop, spent his life saying the same thing in different ways: that this dance is joy, plain and simple. He said he'd never met a Lindy Hopper who wasn't smiling.

Vintage Vibe Events believes in that same energy. It's about connection, a shared love of jazz, and moving to the music together. On the dance floor, there's no room for the things that divide us: where you're from, what you believe. You connect with your partner, you feel the music, you laugh when it goes wrong. For a few hours, everyone's speaking the same language.

Notre souhait

Isabelle has been dancing and teaching for over 30 years. She founded Ottawa Vintage Swing, a school that's still running today, and is the director of Vintage Vibe Events, the event planning company she leads, where the community keeps traditional swing dances alive: Lindy Hop, Balboa, and everything in between. She's trained across Canada, the US, Italy, and Sweden.

Her family's roots trace back to southern Italy, and she splits her time between Ottawa and Calabria. This isn't Rome, Venice, or Florence, and it isn't polished luxury travel, it's the real thing, for travelers who want authentic experience over postcard perfection. This retreat is her invitation to share it: the dancing, the food, the traditions, and the culture, with people curious enough to look past the version of Italy everyone already knows.

Elle s'est formée au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Italie et en Suède.

Ses racines familiales remontent au sud de l'Italie, et elle partage son temps entre Ottawa et la Calabre. Ce n'est ni Rome, ni Venise, ni Florence, et ce n'est pas du voyage de luxe bien poli, c'est l'authentique, pour les voyageurs qui préfèrent l'expérience vraie à la carte postale. Cette retraite est son invitation à la partager : la danse, la cuisine, les traditions et la culture, avec des gens assez curieux pour regarder au-delà de l'Italie que tout le monde connaît déjà.

Where you'll be

The retreat is based in Scilla, with day trips woven through the week.

Scilla

Long before it was a fishing village, Scilla was part of Magna Graecia, the ancient Greek colonies that once shaped southern Italy. The town's name comes from the Greek "Skylla," and legend says this is where Scylla, the mythical sea monster of Homer's Odyssey, guarded the Strait of Messina alongside the whirlpool Charybdis. Above the town, Castello Ruffo still watches over the sea from the same headland it's occupied since that same ancient period, history and myth, layered into the view from where you'll be staying.

Reggio Calabria

Reggio's seafront promenade, lined with palms and framed by old villas, is often called "the most beautiful kilometer in Italy," a line popularly attributed to the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio. Walk it at sunset and Sicily and Mount Etna sit right across the water. We'll head over for an evening walk and dinner.

Taormina

Perched on a hillside above the Ionian Sea, Taormina's ancient Greek theatre dates back to the 3rd century BC and still frames one of Sicily's most striking views, the sea on one side, Mount Etna on the other. We'll take the ferry and train across for the day to wander the ruins and the old town streets.

Scilla

Reggio de Calabre

La promenade en bord de mer de Reggio, bordée de palmiers et de vieilles villas, est souvent appelée « le plus beau kilomètre d'Italie », une phrase populairement attribuée au poète Gabriele D'Annunzio. En s'y promenant au coucher du soleil, on voit la Sicile et l'Etna juste de l'autre côté de l'eau. Nous nous y rendrons pour une promenade en soirée et un dîner.

Taormina

Perché sur une colline au-dessus de la mer Ionienne, le théâtre grec antique de Taormina remonte au IIIe siècle avant J.-C. et offre toujours l'une des vues les plus saisissantes de Sicile : la mer d'un côté, l'Etna de l'autre. Nous traverserons en ferry et en train pour une journée à explorer les ruines et les rues de la vieille ville.

Reggio Calabria

Il lungomare di Reggio, costeggiato da palme e vecchie ville, è spesso chiamato "il chilometro più bello d'Italia", frase popolarmente attribuita al poeta Gabriele D'Annunzio. Passeggiandoci al tramonto, la Sicilia e l'Etna sono proprio dall'altra parte dell'acqua. Ci andremo per una passeggiata serale e una cena.

Taormina

Arroccato su una collina sopra il Mar Ionio, il teatro greco antico di Taormina risale al III secolo a.C. e regala ancora oggi una delle viste più belle della Sicilia: il mare da un lato, l'Etna dall'altro. Attraverseremo in traghetto e in treno per una giornata tra le rovine e le vie del centro storico.

Getting there

The nearest airports are Lamezia Terme (SUF) and Reggio Calabria (REG), both served by connections through major Italian and European hubs. Flights and airport transfers are not included in the retreat price, so book and arrange these on your own.

From Lamezia Terme, the train drops you right in front of the hotel. From Reggio Calabria, it's a short transfer by taxi or car. Once you've booked your flights, let us know your arrival details and we'll help you sort out the transfer.

What dance level is required?

Total beginners are welcome. The Saturday workshops are designed for mixed levels.

What should I pack?

March in Calabria is mild, generally 12–18°C. Bring layers, comfortable dance shoes, and a light jacket for evenings.

Can I bring a non-dancing partner or friend?

Absolutely — this retreat is for anyone who wants the vacation experience, dancer or not.

Is travel insurance required?

Not required, but strongly recommended given our cancellation policy.

What language is spoken?

English, French, and Italian — Belle is trilingual and will be with the group throughout.
